Orrell were hoping to avenge their defeat by Oldershaw earlier in the season, but it was the home side that scored first with a penalty, within the first two minutes of the game. Most of the play after that was in the Oldershaw half, until the mid-point of the first half, when the home side got into the Orrell half and were awarded another penalty which they converted. Just before half time, however, Orrell were awarded a scrum, about 35 metres out. Alex Simpson picked up at No.8 and the ball went along the line for John Presho to break down the wing. He was stopped short of the line, but passed inside to Max Huxley, who had backed up, allowing him to score. Orrell lead at half time 6 -7.
It was Oldershaw who scored first in the second half, with another penalty to take them back into the lead. At the restart, Oldershaw, gathered the ball and then crossed kicked it. The ball landed behind Orrell�s left wing, allowing the home side�s right wing to race onto it and although he was stopped short of the line, the ball was quickly re-cycled, for them to score. The try was converted taking them further into the lead 16 � 7.
Orrell had a chance to reduce the home sides lead, when John Presho again broke away down the right wing, but this time his inside pass was knocked on by the supporting Orrell player. Oldershaw went further ahead with their fourth penalty. However, Orrell did manage to score again just before full time, with another break down the right wing, this time by centre Steve Ainscough, who passed inside to John Presho, who had backed up to score. The try was unconverted, leaving the final score Oldershaw 19 Orrell 12.
