Orrell ended a series of 5 wins when they lost to Marple away. On another sunny afternoon, most of the first 20 minutes were played in the Orrell half. The pressure eventually resulted in a penalty to Marple. From the restart Marple ran the ball to be stopped just short of Orrells line. They then set up a series of rucks close to the try line and they were only stopped from scoring by some solid defensive tacking by Orrell. Orrell then broke out of their own half and Louis Whitfield was tackled inside the Marple ten metre area. At an ensuing scrum, Orrell were awarded a penalty and took a quick tap from which Mick Cardwell charged over to score. Mike Hughes added the conversion to give Orrell the lead. 3 – 7. Marple narrowed the lead with another penalty conversion. Marple were again stopped from scoring by some solid defensive tackling by Orrell close to their line, to keep the score at 6 – 7 at half time.

From the restart, of the second half, Orrell extended their lead when they ran the ball from their own half for Gary Nicholson to score an unconverted try. 6 – 12. Marple again started to attack the Orrell line and what appeared to be a certain try was stopped when Jonny Pegg tackled the ball carrier into touch. However, the Marple pressure continued and with about 20 minutes to go, they again narrowed Orrells lead to one point when they scored an unconverted try near the corner. Marple then again took the lead, when, from a line out, they scored a converted try. 18 – 12.Orrell having used all 3 replacements, went down to 14 players, after Mark Hewlett had to leave the field injured. This allowed Marple to win the ball at a scrum, against a 7 man Orrell pack, and scored their final converted try, between Orrell’s posts. From the restart, with only a few minutes left in the game, Orrell ran the ball for Max Huxley to score their final try in the corner, which was unconverted. Orrell finished the game again defending their try line from another Marple attack. Final Score Marple 25 Orrell 17
