Orrell's defence was up to the test and despite spending long periods in their own half, they prevented the visitors any score in the first half.
Orrell's best chance came via young centre John Presho whose strength and pace troubled the opposition.
Ashton came close to opening the scoring when a penalty attempt rebounded off the post and the visitors quick thinking almost created a try as Orrell failed to clear their line.
With the first half drawing to a close Orrell's forwards built pressure on the Ashton line but with no reward.
Turning round with the conditions now in their favour Orrell started the second half much stronger and gained good field position from a series of penalties, however a combination of strong defence and numerous errors from the home side kept the score deadlocked.
With a draw looking the most likely result a good period of play from the visitors involving both forwards and backs led to a try quickly followed by a converted penalty to give them an 8 point lead.
In the dying minutes of the game replacement Jeff Huxley powered over for a try, following a quick penalty by scrum half Andy Unsworth, and Chris Bennett added the conversion to reduce the gap to one point.
This was to be the final score and left Orrell rueing the decision not to take a penalty conversion chance early in the second half.
Next week Orrell travel to Crewe & Nantwich, kick off 3pm.
