After a poor performance last week Orrell were much improved, against a previously un-beaten Marple side. Having not played each other in this league before, both sides failed to make any significant inroads in the first 20 minutes of the game with both defences playing well. Orrell should have taken the lead, but missed 3 kickable penalties to Marples one. The deadlock was finally broken just before half time when veteran Jeff Huxley picked up at a scrum close to the Marple line and fed Andy Unsworth who scored. The try was not converted. 2 minutes after the re-start Orrell got a penalty 10 metres out and tapped the ball, which was well driven in by Peter Sprung and then recycled for Orrells man of the match John Pickup to score. Again the conversion was missed. Orrell then started to put pressure on Marple but with only 20 minutes left in the game there had been no further score. Good work then by the forwards resulted in Orrell getting a penalty which was converted by Jeff Gavin, Orrell 13 Marple 0.
Orrell relaxed from the restart allowing Marple to regain possession of the ball and score an unconverted try. Orrell 13 Marple 5. Close to the end of normal time Orrell again attacked the Marple line and from a scrum the ball went out to replacement Josh Grant who scored under the post for Jeff Gavin to convert. Orrell 20 Marple 5. In stoppage time Marple tried to run the ball from their own half, only for replacement veteran Brendan O� Keefe, who had just come on to the field, to intercept the ball and score. The try again was converted. However there was still time left in the game for Orrell again to relax from the restart and for Marple to regain possession and to score a consolation try by the post which was converted to make the final score Orrell 27 Marple 12.
