Douglas replied, when, just over half way through the first half, they took advantage of some poor Orrell defence, to score from a quick tap penalty between the posts. The try was converted for Douglas to take the lead. 5 – 7.
Douglas should have gone further head, with first, a break down their right wing then a break down the left. Both attempts were stopped, when Douglas appeared certain to score, by desperate cover tackles by Orrell.
Orrell, however were next to score, when good work by the backs, resulted in a scrum for Douglas about 10 metres from their line. The referee awarded a free kick to Orrell for an infringement by Douglas at the scrum. The ball was quickly tapped enabling Mike Cardwell to drive over. The try was unconverted leaving the score 10 – 7 at half time.
Douglas levelled the score, with a drop goal from Tom Chamberlain, their full back, and most outstanding player. Orrell replied from the restart with some good forward drives which resulted in Jonny Pegg scoring, but again the conversion was missed.
Orrell continued to apply the pressure on Douglas, and could have extended their lead, but 2 penalty attempts were missed. It the last few minutes of the game Orrell did extend their lead, when Geoff Gavin, with his first attempt, converted a penalty to make the final score 18 -10.
Orrell are away next Saturday at Oldershaw, on the Wirral . Kick Off 2.15
