Match Report Orrell Vs Crewe And Nantwich

Date: 23/01/2010
Kick Off: 14:30
Half Time: Orrell 11 Crewe And Nantwich 3
Full Time: Orrell 30 Crewe And Nantwich 3
Orrell welcomed back Alex Simpson from injury for the visit of Crewe & Nantwich.
It was the visitors who won the early contests putting Orrell on the back foot, but Simpson soon got into his stride and his good work close to the ruck gave his backs good ball and set up wing John Presho for an early chance.
Crewe took the lead from a converted penalty and Crewe continued to gain advantage from a series of exchanged long kicks.
Orrell full back Mike Hughes, once again having a very good game, ran at the opposition defence from a deep kick and set up good position from which Orrell were awarded a penalty. Hughes converted to tie the scores.
It was Orrell who were looking most likely to score as the half came towards its close with Mark Hewlett just stopped just short of the line and several other chances thwarted by strong defence.
Hughes added another penalty before Presho, chasing a long kick from Mike Clarke, was cynically taken out of play by the Crewe full back.
The referee awarded a penalty which was quickly taken by Andy Unsworth and Presho scored a try to give Orrell a comfortable lead at half time.
The second half was dominated by the home side with good work from the forwards early on going unrewarded. But the continued pressure paid off as wing Gary Nicholson broke free and passed inside for Max Huxley to score a try in the corner. Hughes added a fine conversion to extend the lead.
With time running out replacement scrum half Andy Draper picked up a loose ball and beat the chasing defence to score and replacement forward Ashley Bennan made a strong run down the wing before passing to Hewlett who showed his strength to force his way over the try line.
Crewe fought hard to the end and good home defence was needed to prevent them taking a consolation score.
An excellent performance from Orrell enjoyed by a good crowd at John Rigby.
Next week Orrell are once again at home to face Wallasey, kick off 2.30pm.
