Match Report Trentham Vs Orrell

Date: 05/12/2009
Kick Off: 14:00
Half Time: Trentham 8 Orrell 0
Full Time: Trentham 8 Orrell 17
Orrell had a poor first half, the only highlights being two pick ups from the base of the scrums by Steve Huxley who drove several metres into the opposition defence. Trentham scored, just afterwards. Steve Huxley, unfortunately had to retire from the game about half way through the first half. Poor handling by Orrell resulted in the ball being dropped close to their line, which the opposition gathered to score between the posts. The conversion attempt hit the crossbar and bounced out. Further poor handling and unforced errors by Orrell lead to them being penalized for holding on to the ball, and Trentham converted the penalty to make the score 8 nil to them at half time.
Orrell improved in the second half and after 10 minutes were awarded a scrum about ten metres from the opposition line. The scrum half, Andy Draper, picked up from the base of the scrum and went wide, then passed inside to Mike Caldwell the number 8, who drove over the line to open Orrell’s scoring. The try was converted by Mike Hughes.
Orrell continued to put Trentham under pressure, causing them to commit a number of offences which eventually resulted in one of the opposition props being sin binned. The full back converted the penalty to take Orrell into the lead 10-8. Full back Mick Hughes, who had a very good game, kept Trentham pinned back in their own half and the opposition went down to13 men with another sin binning.
Orrell were now rarely out of the oppositions half, and a clearance kick by Trentham was taken by John Presho about 10 metres inside the oppositions half, close to the touch line. He then ran through the Trentham cover beating 3 or 4 would-be tacklers to score between the posts, for an easy conversion by Mike Hughes
Although the opposition were back to 15 men, they were not able to mount any counter- attacks and the final score was Trentham 8 Orrell 17.
