Half Time: Crewe And Nantwich 3 Orrell 10
Full Time: Crewe And Nantwich 11 Orrell 21
Crewe had been undefeated at home this season, but inside two minutes Orrell opened up the scoring in this match. From a ruck, just inside their own half, Orrell passed the ball along their three quarter line. Although the ball was fumbled it was eventually passed to Gary Nicholson on the wing, for him to race 30 metres. He then passed inside to Mark Hewlett, backing up to score. The try was converted by Chris Bennett.
Orrell forwards were solid in the scrums with a front row of Whittaker, Daley and Allen (who was having his first game of the season). Orrell also dominated in the line outs, with Bennett taking some of Crewe’s throw in as well as their own, but spent most of the rest of the first half in their own half.
Crewe missed a couple of penalty kicks, but their main threat came from their right winger. After making a good break along his wing, he was eventually stopped by Peter Sprung, but unfortunately with a high tackle. Although down to 14 men after Sprung was sin binned, Orrell managed to extend their lead with a penalty by Bennett. This was immediately cancelled out when at the restart Crewe were awarded a penalty which they converted. Half Time Score Crewe 3 Orrell 10.
Within two minutes of Orrell being restored to 15 men they were again reduced to 14 when John Whittaker was sin binned for an off the ball incident. Midway through the second half, Crewe knocked on, near their 22metre line. The referee played advantage, and the ball went quickly to John Presho, who made a half break, and then passed to Nicholson on the wing, who, beat one man, then stepped inside to beat another and to score. The conversion was missed.
5 minutes later Crewe kicked a penalty and Orrell were again down to 14 men when Jeff Gavin was sin binned. Although a man down Orrell drove into the Crewe half and were awarded a penalty, which was converted by Bennett.
Crewe then scored when the ball, from a ruck inside their half, was passed to their danger man on the right wing, who beat 3 Orrell tacklers to score an unconverted try, but bringing Crewe to within a Converted try of Orrells Score. In the dying moments of the game Orrell were awarded a penalty, converted again by Bennett to make the final score Crewe 11 Orrell 21
