Unfortunately the game did not start well for Orrell when front row forward Simon Vost had to retire with a knee injury which he sustained in the first scrum of the game. He was however ably replaced by John Whittaker.
Liverpool opened the scoring with a penalty after a high tackle. Further pressure from the Liverpool forwards produced 2 tries taking the score to 17 – 0.
Orrell struck back 10 minutes before half time when an excellent defence breaking run from Peter Sprung from within Orrell’s half, which resulted in a fine run along the wing by Dave Brown who drew the cover and passed inside to Andt Unsworth to score. The try was not converted and unfortunately this was to be Orrells only score of the game.
Just before half time, Liverpool scored again. Half time score Liverpool 24 Orrell 5.
Immediately after half time Liverpool were reduced to 14 men, but Orrell could not take advantage of having an additional player, unlike Liverpool who scored when Peter Sprung was sin binned for a high tackle. Liverpool were now full of confidence and were moving the ball quickly through their three-quarter and scored 2 more tries.
Orrell also had to replace Chris Cunliffe late in the game, who had to be taken to hospital with a damaged knee.
Final score Liverpool 41 Orrell 5
Orrell were without a number of the players who defeated Buxton last week, but this can only be viewed as a poor performance and improvements will have to be made when the team play Marple next week at St John Rigby College Kick Off 2.30.
On a brighter note Orrell 2nd team played their first match of the season at St. John Rigby College against Clitheroe 2nd winning convincingly 94 – 0. They play Pendle 2nd away next Saturday.
